Kathmandu, Oct 29: Executive chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Dr Dharmaraj Uprety, has said it is imperative to ensure timely dissemination of information and disaster preparedness so that disaster risks could be minimized to people, property and livelihoods.

Executive chief Dr Uprety said it while making a presentation in the main session of the regional dialogue titled ‘From Sagarmatha to Sea: Lessons learned from Nepal’s Bhotekoshi-Trishuli Disaster’ organized in Bangkok on Thursday. He added that data sharing, joint risk assessment, cross-border early warning system and coordinated preparedness are other imperatives.

“Risks in mountains make connection to the sea. Therefore, our response must connect our science, our institutions and our countries,” Dr Uprety stressed. He shared that Nepal was now promoting resilience through reconstruction.

Strengthening cooperation between the Himalayan and low-lying countries is equally essential to cope with disasters caused by climate change, according to him. 

The regional dialogue was organized on the sidelines of the 5th Ministerial Conference on Space Applications for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific held in Bangkok, Thailand.
