Gorkha, Oct 15: More than a thousand people have been rescued by helicopter from the Budhigandaki flood-affected areas from Sunday to Thursday. Assistant Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma said a total of 1,044 people, including 70 foreign nationals, were rescued during this period.

The flood damaged the trail and bridge leading to northern Gorkha, trapping the residents in that area. Sharma said they were rescued by the Nepali Army's helicopter.

According to him, 96 people from the affected areas were rescued on the first day of the flood, Sunday. Similarly, 321 people were rescued on Monday and 186 people were rescued on Tuesday while 441 people were rescued on Wednesday.

It is mentioned that relief distribution has been expedited along with rescue efforts. Assistant Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma said that relief materials such as food, tents, mats, blankets, tarpaulins, solar panels, and generators are being distributed with support from the government and various organizations.

He said that helicopters had to be used for rescue and relief after the flood damaged both the road network and trails. “Helicopters are also being used to deliver relief. The helicopter that goes from here to carry out rescues carries relief materials on the way there and brings people back on the way,” he added.

Red Cross's support
Meanwhile, the Nepal Red Cross Society has intensified its response to the flash flood in the Budhigandaki River. Secretary General Rishi Khanal informed that volunteers have been immediately deployed for flood response along with damage assessment, and efforts are being made to deliver non-food items to the affected areas.

"As soon as we received the flood alert, we deployed volunteers to Gorkha, Dhading, Tanahun, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi East and West. They disseminated the flood warning. The disaster response operation is ongoing," he said.
