Kathmandu, Aug 18: Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Geeta Chaudhary, has committed to reduce the payment time span for milk purchased from dairy farmers.
Responding to questions raised in today's meeting of the House of Representatives, she said that compared to the past the payment period for milk purchased from farmers has been reduced from eight months to three months and that it would be reduced further in the coming days.
"The payment period will be reduced to 25 days by the last week of Bhadra," Minister Chaudhary said.
She shared that the financial liability of the Dairy Development Corporation has increased due to the large stock of milk and dairy products, high milk processing costs, administrative expenses, weak management and old structure.
According to Minister Chaudhary, there are 235 milk cooperatives supplying milk to DDC across the country. For the past two months, the corporation has focused its entire attention on farmers' payments.
She said that the managerial and financial reforms of the corporation have been prioritized to improve the financial condition of DDC, market management and regularize farmers' payments.
The Agriculture Minister also shared the Ministry's plan to take a loan of Rs 400 million from the Government to pay the due payment of dairy farmers and set up a new processing plant.
