Kathmandu, Sept 1: MPs from various political parties have urged everyone to rise above party lines and engage in humanitarian efforts in the aftermath of the devastating flood that occurred in Rasuwa's Bhotekoshi river on August 26.

They made this call while speaking in the meeting of the National Assembly (NA), the upper house of the Federal Parliament. The upper house had met today for the first time after the devastating Bhotekoshi flood.

Speaking on a party basis at the meeting, Kamala Panta of the Nepali Congress urged deploying advanced equipment and special personnel for the rescue efforts after the disaster.

She emphasized that the government should inform the Parliament about the rescue and search efforts, and said that there should be national unity and collective action to face such a huge natural disaster.

Nepali Communist Party (NCP) lawmaker Jhakku Prasad Subedi said that since Nepalis are facing a disaster they have never experienced before, we need to rise above political parties and cliques when it comes to rescue and relief efforts.

He emphasized the need to make the global community understand that such problems have arisen due to the over-exploitation and pollution of nature by rich and powerful countries and the rising temperatures. Subedi also suggested that among the injured and displaced, pregnant women and children should be kept in safe places in a separate way.

Dr. Prem Prasad Dangal of the CPN (UML) said that they are with the families affected by the disaster and urged everyone to go full force in searching for the missing people.

He mentioned that bodies are still scattered along the riverbanks, so coordination between all three levels of government needs to be increased. He also said that we need to take initiatives for climate justice to protect the Earth and human civilization.

Janata Samajbadi Party MP Mahantha Thakur expressed condolences for the deceased, saying that we need to unite to face disasters by getting support from neighbours and the international community. 

Meanwhile, speaking during the zero hour of the NA meeting today, the upper house members highlighted the need for a united effort to tackle national disasters.

They emphasized that the state must deploy all its power in the search, rescue, relief, and rehabilitation of those affected by the devastating Bhotekoshi flood.

The members drew the government's attention to modernizing the early warning system, strictly implementing the warnings, and building disaster-resilient infrastructure.

Nepali Congress's Kamaladevi Panta urged not to ignore flood and landslide warnings and to take immediate action. She suggested that the government use all available resources to search for and rescue missing people and to immediately move citizens at risk to safe locations.

Jayantidevi Rai of the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) drew the government's attention to provide immediate proper relief to those affected by the flood.

Nara Bahadur Bista from the same party called for attention to the fact that distributing relief through a one-door system during disasters could cause more suffering for the affected.

Nepali Congress's Narayan Datta Mishra suggested the government to immediately study the risky glaciers in the northern part of the country and plan for disaster-resilient infrastructure.

Madan Kumari Shah 'Garima' of the NCP called for coordination between the federal, provincial, and local governments for search, rescue, relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction during a national disaster.

Nepali Congress's Yubaraj Sharma pointed out that a weak early warning system caused significant damage and drew the government's attention to modernize the system.

Rajendra Laxmi Gaire of the NCP drew the government's attention to increase efforts for the speedy rescue of citizens trapped in the hydropower project tunnel.

Suresh Kumar Ale Magar from the same party said that because climate change has caused a disaster in the Bhotekoshi, it is necessary to draw the international community's attention to climate justice.

Sonam Gyaljen Sherpa of the CPN (UML) emphasized that the whole country needs to unite to fight disasters and praised the government's efforts in rescuing those affected by the floods.
