Summer 2026 was the hottest on record in Belgium, the country's weather agency said Tuesday, making it the latest European nation to smash temperature records this year.

    Temperatures in the official national reference station in Uccle, outside Brussels, averaged 20.3 C -- 2.4 C above the mean of recent decades -- the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) said.

    "This represents an all-time record (based on observations dating back to 1833) and marks the first time this average has exceeded 20 C," the RMI said.

    "It is a significant increase compared to the previous record" of 19.9 C registered in 2018, it added.

    More accustomed to mild and wet weather, Belgium has experienced several heatwaves since June and was hit by its largest wildfire in a century in August.

    The blaze, which was brought under control after a seven-day fight involving hundreds of firefighters, was one of many that swept the continent over the past few months.

    France, Greece, Portugal and Spain also battled major fires, as successive heat spells have roasted Europe since May, bringing temperatures of 40C and above. Britain also reported experiencing its hottest summer ever on Tuesday.

    All-time temperature records were also broken in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary earlier in the summer.

    Scientists warn that climate change is making extreme weather events more intense and resulting in heat records tumbling more often.

    Some 33 countries, spanning from western Europe to the Sahel and central America, recorded their hottest July since records began this year, according to AFP analysis of data from the European Union's Copernicus climate observatory.
