Kathmandu, Aug 23: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, has said the mega irrigation projects were essential to boost agricultural productions. Once agricultural activities are expanded, atmosphere is created for retaining youths within country, he added.

During an inspection visit to the Sunsari-Morang Irrigation Project, he listened to the people who complained of problems caused by the irrigation project. Irrigation should not be regarded as a matter of mere canal construction, he said, adding that even the schemes for empowerment of farmers should be advanced together with investment in irrigation.

The Minister shared, "The Ministry is conducting a thorough study on how irrigation and agricultural programmes can be advanced in an integrated manner." The Sunsari-Morang Irrigation Project had been contributing to an agricultural production worth more than Rs 14 billion annually, according to him.

Shrestha also argued once the irrigation system is run effectively, it also contributes to energy production and other economic activities. The irrigation system should be made friendly to water consumers so that rights of the local people would be addressed.

Information on it was shared by the Minister's personal secretariat. Priority to the nature-based solution was also underlined while developing irrigation infrastructures.
